STEAM K-2
Welcome to STEAM for Grades K to 2 at P.S. 102!
What is STEAM?
STEAM is fun, hands-on learning that accomplishes so much. Even the youngest "STEAMers" start to learn about the engineering design process. Students learn to work in teams and to ask questions, to solve problems, to experiment and to test their ideas, as well as to make improvements to their designs. Our youngest STEAM students actively learn about themselves and the world around them through lessons emphasizing Health, Science, and Sustainability. STEAM K-2 prepares students to go on to do great things in Mrs. Carter's 3-5 STEAM program as well as to go on and become healthy, critically-thinking, problem-solving global citizens.
STEAM Spotlight
Every month, an engineer is chosen from each grade to spotlight. These engineers are chosen because they have demonstrated working very well in a team, using their materials in a creative way, standing out in class discussions, persisting through challenges, and putting extra care into their work. Well done, Engineers of the Month!

Preparing for Climate Action Day 3: Health, Wellness and Green Spaces
STEAMers at P.S. 102 prepared for Climate Action Day 3 by learning about Health, Wellness and Green spaces. Students learned that green spaces help reduce temperatures, improve air quality, absorb rain water and help uplift moods. STEAMers problem solved to address the issue that some neighborhoods do not have enough green spaces by working with a teammate to design a green space. STEAMers designed beautiful and beneficial parks, playgrounds and gardens.
Nest Challenge
STEAMers took on a challenge to help Mama Bird get ready for spring! Students learned more about how birds build nests. They worked with a partner to design a plan for a nest with a choice of materials. Next, STEAMers built their nests, tested their nest's ability to hold eggs and shared their results. STEAMers are ready for the birdsong this spring!
Preparing for Climate Action Day 2: Waste
Students in STEAM classes prepared for the city-wide Climate Action Day 2 on waste by learning about how important it is to reduce waste. Students also learned ways to reduce waste including using less, reusing more, and most importantly, sorting waste. Students prepared to improve waste sorting in the cafeteria and begin composting on our climate action day. By recycling and composting we are sending much less waste to landfills and incinerators, creating less pollution and taking better care of our school and Earth.
Preparing for Climate Action Day One: Energy
STEAMers at P.S. 102 played an important role in preparing for and participating in NYC Public Schools' first ever Climate Action Day on Energy on December 6th. STEAMEers participated in lessons on conserving energy. STEAMers brainstormed ways to raise awareness about our plan to turn lights off and let the sunshine in, and then worked hard to make beautiful posters to hang in our halls. Two STEAMers made morning announcements on the day of the event to encourage participation. Because of the hard STEAMers' work, P.S. 102 was ready to conserve energy on our Climate Action Day!
Learning About Renewable Energy: Solar
STEAMers extended their learning on conserving energy to learn about renewable sources of energy including solar. On our Climate Action Day, we turned off lights and let the sunshine in the windows. STEAMers learned that the sun's energy can also be harnessed and converted to electricity through the use of solar panels. STEAMers designed and created their own beautiful solar panel models by drawing, cutting and pasting different kinds of paper. Hooray for the sun!
Tallest Tower Challenge
STEAMers went to the next level in their engineering skills by taking on the tallest tower challenge. STEAM teams worked together to build the tallest tower using only cups, popsicle sticks, and blocks. Students learned to build a strong and wide base, to think about the qualities of building materials as well as to make adjustments and improvements with every build. STEAMers showed great problem solving skills and terrific teamwork!
Expanding on Bridge Building in Grs 1 and 2
First and Second Graders took their bridge building to the next level by taking on the Spider Bridge Challenge. STEAMers learned some ways that engineers--both human and spider--make their bridges strong. Students compared and contrasted real-world bridges and spider webs. Next, STEAMers worked with a partner to create a plan to build their own bridge with cups, tape, and yarn strong enough to hold up to 5 interlocking cubes. Then, teams built their bridges and tested their bridges' strength. STEAMers had so much fun and are becoming smarter engineers with every build!
Designing Seed's Costume in Kindergarten and Gr 1
Kindergartners and First Graders worked hard on teamwork skills. They then used these skills to work with a partner and the engineering design process to make a costume for the Bad Seed. First, teams worked together to agree on a costume for Seed and created a plan with crayons. Then, teams used small pieces of fancy paper and glue to make Seed's Costume based on their plans. Teams presented their creations to the class and then for the biggest challenge, teams decided which teammate would bring the plan home and which teammate would bring the costume home. STEAMers persisted and rose to the challenge! Well done!
Sculpting What Makes You Unique in Kindergarten
Students learned what the letters of STEAM stand for and they were introduced to the engineering design process. Students worked on the Social Emotional Learning concepts that people can be similar and different as well as that everyone is unique. Students created sculptures of their favorite things to show what makes them unique.
Connecting Differences by Bridge Building in Gr 1
First graders reviewed the engineering design process. They enjoyed Social Emotional Learning lessons that covered identifying feelings and accepting differences in others. They applied these concepts to their first build, which was a bridge that represented connecting to others despite differences. They did an amazing job asking questions, identifying problems, making plans to build their bridges, and finally building and testing their designs.
Celebrating Differences by Bridge Building in Gr 2
Second graders reviewed the engineering design process. Students enjoyed Social Emotional Learning lessons that covered the concepts of expressing frustration and anger in healthy ways as well as that differences can enrich friendships. We read Minh Le's wonderful book, Drawn Together, and then built bridges out of straws and tape to represent the connection the characters made despite their differences. They all did a wonderful job!
