Dear PS 102 Families,
Happy GivingTuesday! Today is dedicated to supporting the communities that matter
most. As you know the PS 102 PTA is run by parent volunteers, and everything we do is
possible because of families like yours. Together, we strengthen connections and raise
money to support essential in-school and extracurricular programs for all students. From
assemblies and Career Day to Picture Day and more, we help PS 102 be a meaningful and
enriching experience for every child. Our mission is to ensure every family feels
welcomed, valued, and part of our vibrant school community.
One of the important ways we raise money to fund our programming is PTA Dues. This
year our goal is to raise $8,000 in dues donations, and we’re proud to share that
families have already contributed $2,633. Every parent, caregiver, and teacher is
automatically a member of the PTA and dues are not required, but optional and
appreciated. To support our fundraising goal, any donation amount is happily
welcomed!
Your support directly funds programs our kids love, including:
● Assemblies that make learning exciting
● Classroom and art supplies for teachers
● Family nights that bring everyone together
● Cultural celebrations that reflect our diverse community
Use this link and put “Dues” in notes to make a dues donation or send cash or
a check in the envelope provided. Please make checks payable to PS 102 PTA.
Thank you for helping make PS 102 such a caring and creative place for our children.
With appreciation,
The PS 102 PTA

In accordance with New York State law, New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) is implementing a citywide policy for distraction-free learning. This policy will encourage deeper participation in class, so students can stay engaged the entire school day from bell to bell. All NYC public schools will prohibit the use of personal cell phones and internet-enabled electronic devices—such as smartphones, tablets, and smart watches—during the school day. Students may bring personal devices but cannot use them during class or on school grounds unless an exception applies.

Dear Families and Staff:
This is a follow up to a letter informing you that your school’s water outlets would be tested for lead
in 2023.
On September 27, 2023, all operational sources of water at P.S. 102 - Brooklyn (P.S. 102 The
Bayview at 211 72 Street Brooklyn, NY 11209), including for drinking or cooking, were tested for
the presence of lead. The laboratory results showed elevated levels of lead in 5 of the 74 samples
outlets from which water was taken and tested. Any drinking or cooking outlet with elevated levels
was immediately taken out of service, and will remain out of service until it is successfully
remediated. Details of elevated results are attached and complete test results are posted on the
DOE website at https://www.schools.nyc.gov/schools/K102. Click “Reports” and look for the
“Facilities” heading.
The test results include water outlets that are not used for drinking or cooking, including
handwashing sinks. Sinks will have clear signs indicating “Hand Washing Only” and “Not for
Drinking Use.” The custodial staff will continue to flush the P.S. 102 - Brooklyn water systems on
Monday mornings and after holidays to eliminate stagnant water. This is part of our comprehensive
protocol to ensure safe drinking water for students and staff in each and every school. To learn
more about the protocol please visit
https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/space-and-facilities/space-and-facilities-reports/water-safety
We will keep you updated on the remediation work at P.S. 102 - Brooklyn, and thank you for your
patience and support.
Sincerely yours,
Kevin Moran

Safe and healthy school environments can foster healthy and successful children. To protect public health, the Public
Health Law and New York State Health Department (NYSDOH) regulations require that all public schools and boards of
cooperative educational services (BOCES) test lead levels in water from every outlet that is being used, or could
potentially be used, for drinking or cooking. If lead is found at any water outlet at levels equal to or above 5 parts per
billion (ppb), which is equal to 5 micrograms per liter (µg/L), the NYSDOH requires that the school take action to reduce
lead exceedance.
What are the initial first draw testing elevation results?
Samples Collected on 09/27/2023
Floor Function / Space Closest Room Outlet Type Sample Results (ppb)
02 Bathroom 217A Cold Water Faucet 1 5.48 ppb
02 Classroom 215 Cold Water Faucet 1 5.4 ppb
03 Classroom 301A Cold Water Faucet 1 5.8 ppb
03 Classroom 314 Cold Water Faucet 1 9.64 ppb
03 Library 317 Bubbler 1 37.6 ppb
What is being done in response to the results?
Each of the affected drinking or cooking outlets, have been taken out of service and will remain out of service until
remediation work is completed and future testing provides results below the action level. Outlets that are not used for
drinking or cooking that tested with lead levels above the action level (5 ppb) will remain in service for hand washing
only, with “Hand Washing Only” and “Not for Drinking Use” signs posted.

On November 18, Mayor Eric Adams issued a drought warning for New York City. All New Yorkers are encouraged to conserve water. Based on Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) guidance, we encourage families and staff to adopt water-saving habits, emphasizing reducing water use as a shared responsibility:
Report open fire hydrants and street leaks to 311.
Limit unnecessary flushing, as toilets account for a major portion of water use.
Reduce shower times.
Turn off faucets: Avoid running water while brushing teeth or washing hands.
Fix leaks promptly: Report and repair any dripping faucets or running toilets.
Run dishwashers and washing machines only when full.
Ask custodial teams to use brooms to clean sidewalks and driveways where possible.
Additional tips for reducing water use can be found at nyc.gov/savewater.
