On November 18, Mayor Eric Adams issued a drought warning for New York City. All New Yorkers are encouraged to conserve water. Based on Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) guidance, we encourage families and staff to adopt water-saving habits, emphasizing reducing water use as a shared responsibility:
Report open fire hydrants and street leaks to 311.
Limit unnecessary flushing, as toilets account for a major portion of water use.
Reduce shower times.
Turn off faucets: Avoid running water while brushing teeth or washing hands.
Fix leaks promptly: Report and repair any dripping faucets or running toilets.
Run dishwashers and washing machines only when full.
Ask custodial teams to use brooms to clean sidewalks and driveways where possible.
Additional tips for reducing water use can be found at nyc.gov/savewater.
The listening tours will be held from 6:00–8:00 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) on the following dates: interested participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible as space is limited:

Sign up is required and an adult must accompany and supervise children. All dates will be confirmed by email by the day before and will be rescheduled if rain is likely.
Dress for possible mess and bring your own gloves if you prefer (or use ours - we have cotton and also disposable).
Feel free to bring a snack and water bottle.
Activities may include clean-up, planting, harvesting, watering, weeding, clipping, mowing, digging and enjoying our natural world. Bring a sketch pad/pencils or a camera if you like!
Feel free to bring/drop off veggie/fruit/bread/coffee grinds/tea bags/egg shells for our compost on these dates. (Please no meat/dairy or oils)
All family members are expected to participate - but you will be able to choose from a range of jobs from light duty to a garden workout.
Younger and older siblings are very welcome.
Please sign up by emailing melliotsheri@schools.nyc.gov. Available dates:
Wednesday 9/11/24
Monday 9/16/24
Tuesday 9/24/24
Monday 9/30/24
Parents work together each Friday morning from 9:00 - 10:30ish to maintain the garden throughout the year. "Meetings" are informal - but we do use this time to make plans for the garden season and future programming for our students and families. Gloves and tools are available. These sessions are cancelled in the event of rain or cold temperatures (below 40 degrees.) If they are cancelled for any other reason, I will post on www.ps102.org as early as possible. Hope to see you soon!
We meet throughout the year - though our sessions are more brief in the winter months. In the winter we host a Winter Solstice Celebration from 10-2 and we raise money at the PTA Valentine's Day Sale in February - donations of garden/plant/nature/love themed items to sell at our table are appreciated.
If you are not getting emails about the garden and would like to -- please ask me to add you to the list: melliotsheri@schools.nyc.gov.
In September, we are reading:
Kindergarten: The Pigeon HAS to Go to School by Mo Willems
Grades 1&2: Butterflies on the First Day of School by Annie Silvestro
Grades 3-5: Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena
